Commentary

Younger people are delaying the age at which they first start smoking. In 1998, nationally, the average age of initiation was 14.2 years; by 2016, this figure had risen to 16.3 years. In the ACT in 2016, 68.5% of females and 62.5% of males reported never smoking, 8.7% of females and 10.4% of males reported smoking daily and 21.4% females and 24.3% of males reported being an ex-smoker.
